1. The pleasure of being in God’s house should fuel our desire to be in His presence.
“How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young— a place near your altar, Lord Almighty, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.” // Psalm 84:1-4
DWELLING PLACE (v. 1) – (HEBREW) MISHKAN Tabernacle; place where God dwells.
Question: In what ways can we be intentional about dwelling in the Presence of God?
COURTS – (v. 1) (HEBREW – CHATSAR) Enclosed yard or tower; surrounded by the Presence of God.
Question: What and who do you choose to surround yourself with?
Life Lesson: Those who dwell in the Presence of the Lord are under the Protection of the Lord.
BLESSED (v. 4) (HEBREW – ESHER) Happy
Life Lesson: The Presence of God should be your Happy Place!
2. The pleasure of experiencing God’s strength can only be received when we are in God’s presence. (84:5-9).
“Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools. They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion. Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty; listen to me, God of Jacob. Look on our shield, O God; look with favor on your anointed one.” // Psalm 84:5-9
A. GOD GIVES US STRENGTH SO THAT WE CAN EXPERIENCE BREAKTHROUGHS.
Question: What happens to individual who does not depend on the strength of God, i.e. tries to handle things on their own?
B. PRAYER AND WORSHIP TAKES US INTO HIS PRESENCE.
Anointed One (v. 9) – is a reference to the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. The word “Christ” is not Jesus’ last name, it means “Anointed One.”
3. The pleasure of enjoying God Himself and His abundant goodness should fuel our desire to be in His house.
“Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you.” // Psalm 84:10-12
A. The pleasure of being even at the doorstep of God’s house is far better than all the pleasures of sin.
Question: Why are we living in a season where Americans are placing less emphasis on Sunday morning church attendance?
B. The pleasure of enjoying God Himself and His abundant goodness is incomparable.
“For the Lord God is a sun and a shield; the Lord gives grace and glory; no good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly” // Palm 84:11
(1) We are blessed with God’s light. The Lord God is a sun to us.
(2) We are blessed with God’s shield of protection.
(3) We are blessed with God’s grace.
(4) We are blessed with God’s glory.
(5) We are blessed by God not withholding any good thing.
C. There is a requirement to receiving god’s blessings
“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you.” // Psalm 84:11, 12
Question: From verse 11, what does it mean to “walk blameless?”
Life Lesson: This Psalm references a conditional promise. When you do your part (walk blameless), then God will do His part (He will bless you!)
