Psalm 23 – 6 Gifts From God

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.  Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” // Psalm 23 (NIV)

GIFT #1) You are Blessed with the Provisions of God

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.”

When we lack money and resources and we don’t have what we want, we get stressed out. This kind of stress leads me to ask questions like  . .

“I have bills to pay and purchases to make and not enough resources. How can I survive?”  “How do I make ends meet?”

How can I turn the negative stress trigger of money issues into something positive?

Trust in God, Jehovah Jireh, He is your Provider. If you truly make the Lord your shepherd, you can relax –knowing that God is in control.

Question: Why is it so difficult for people to trust God with their finances?

GIFT #2) You are Blessed with the Peace of God

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters.”

He restores my soul. How are you restored?  How do you recharge?

Trust in God, Jehovah Shalom, He is Your Peace.  Rest. Spend time with the Lord.  Allow the Lord to make you rest in green pastures and enjoy quiet waters.

Question: How can I turn the negative stress emotion of busyness into something positive?

GIFT #3) You are Blessed with the Wisdom of God

“He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.”

“Lord, can you give me wisdom to make the right decision?”  We all need direction. We all need guidance. We need the Lord to be our Shepherd.

How can I turn the negative stress emotion of every day decisions into something positive?

Trust in God, Jehovah Rohi, your Shepherd.  Call on the Name of the Lord.  Do everything FOR HIS NAME SAKE.

Question: In what area of life do you need wisdom today?

GIFT #4) You are Blessed with the Presence of God

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” (v. 4)

Life is tough. And sometimes we have to go through the valley of the shadow of death – or the valley of the shadow of depression – or the valley of the shadow debt – or the valley of the shadow of conflict – or the valley of the shadow of discouragement.  Just remember that a shadow makes things look bigger than they really are. A shadow has the tendency to make things look uglier than it really is.

There is a Hebrew word that describes God’s presence . . . Jehovah Shamma, He is always there.

Question: How do you know that you are in the Presence of God when you are at work? In your home? In times of relaxation?

GIFT #5) You are Blessed with the Protection of God

(v. 5) You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

As David is writing this Psalm, he is being attacked by Saul and Saul’s army. Does David sound stressed out? Nope. When you are under attack, it takes Daring Faith to trust in God.  Let God be your defender.

Don’t overlook the phrase here, “You anoint my head with oil.”  Oil is a symbol of . . .  The Holy Spirit.  When we are being attacked by the enemy, we need the anointing of the Holy Spirit to cover us.

GIFT #6) You are Blessed with the Promises of God

(v. 6) Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
